Lilongwe, the second largest city of Malawi, has been it's capital since 1975. This city was chosen to be the capital because it was located in a fertile region. It was chosen to let northern and central Malawi grow economically. It began to be developed in 1968, and so now has an international airport and rail connection. It has also been industrialized in parts. The city supports a population of over 223,000.
