The Pawn

Chessboard

At the beginning of the game, White's Pawns cover the entire 2nd rank, and Black's Pawns the 7th. Pawns advance one square at a time, unless another piece is in front of them. They move forward from their owner's perspective, and can capture only if there is an enemy piece one square diagonally in front. For example, the Black Pawn on c6 can take the White Knight on d5 or move forward. Pawns have the option of moving two squares on their first move.

Chessboard

In chess notation, Pawns are represented by the lowercase letter of the file that they occupy.

White has moved his pawn from g2 to g4. Black took the Knight with c6xd5, or cxd5 for short.
