Getting Started - Coaching Roles

Part E: Examining Coaching Roles

In this activity, you will review an example of coaching to help you:

  • understand coaching roles.
  • connect a coaching cycle to a concrete example.
  • think about coaching and learning.

Examining Coaching Roles

Share a computer with 3–4 people.

  1. Open the Examples of Coaching handout and follow the directions.
  2. Using the example, identify the:
    • role of the coach.
    • stages of the coaching cycle used in the example.
    • ways that coaching impacted learning.
Example: Together, Jenny and Anna sat down and assessed Jenny's preparedness to teach writing before they discussed what to do to increase her student's motivation to write. (Assess from the Coaching Cycle.)
  3. Be prepared to share with the large group.

Conclusion

Make a quick set of notes about the roles you think you will play as a coach. You will use these notes in the next activity when you develop your coaching plan.
