Peer Coaching
Getting Started - Coaching Roles
Part E: Examining Coaching Roles
In this activity, you will review an example of coaching to help you:
- understand coaching roles.
- connect a coaching cycle to a concrete example.
- think about coaching and learning.
Examining Coaching Roles
Share a computer with 3–4 people.
- Open the Examples of Coaching handout and follow the directions.
- Using the example, identify the:
- role of the coach.
- stages of the coaching cycle used in the example.
- ways that coaching impacted learning.
Example: Together, Jenny and Anna sat down and assessed Jenny's preparedness to teach writing before they discussed what to do to increase her student's motivation to write. (Assess from the Coaching Cycle.)
- Be prepared to share with the large group.
Conclusion
Make a quick set of notes about the roles you think you will play as a coach. You will use these notes in the next activity when you develop your coaching plan.
