Peer Coaching

Getting Started - Overview

Part C: Peer Coaching Programme Goals

Most of us have some knowledge of coaching. Many of us have coached other teachers. Unfortunately, coaching is not always successful. According to a recent article written by Alan Richard (2003), school-based professional development efforts that fail do so for three main reasons:

  • Lack of experience
  • Poor communication skills
  • Limited preparation

The Peer Coaching programme is designed to provide teacher leaders with the preparation, experience, and communication skills they need to be successful coaches. The programme goals are to:

  • Train teacher leaders to serve as peer coaches for colleagues.
  • Engage students in powerful, ICT-rich learning that will prepare them for their future.
  • Foster systemic adoption of 21st Century teaching and learning.
  • Assist schools to build the capacity to meet their own professional development needs.

After participating in this programme , Peer Coaches will have the skills and experience needed to:

  • Provide just-in-time, just enough advice or training.
  • Plan learning activities with teachers.
  • Model or team teach learning activities.
  • Encourage reflection on learning activities and provide feedback.

Part D: Programme Overview

  1. Read the Peer Coach Overview (read the shaded areas for an abridged version).
  2. Spend a few minutes reviewing the Peer Coaching Programme at a Glance handout which provides a brief overview of how the learning activities in each session help coaches develop coaching skills, lesson design skills, and a deeper understanding of how technology best supports strong teaching and learning.
  3. Raise any questions you might have.
