The active role of the learner

Remember that the outcomes written in the lessons are all about what the learners will be able to do by the end of the lesson. "Do" is an active word and there are many different verbs that can describe the actions that the learners can perform, as we have seen in the first section of this workshop. In ensuring that learners are active during lessons, we therefore need to provide the following:
  • a variety of activities
  • activities that cater for a variety of intelligences
  • activities that challenge the learner
  • activities that relate to real life experiences as far as possible.

What are the best ways to actively involve learners in a lesson? Brainstorm a list of possible strategies in your group.

Rules of the brainstorm

Choose three specific outcomes and identify parts of your curriculum that you would use to achieve such an outcome. Choose an activity / activities from your brainstormed list which would be suitable for such a lesson(s).

Record these in your electronic journal as possible strategies to try in class.

Note: The next two workshops in this series will deal with Thinking Skills and Questioning Skills.
