Targeting 21st Century Skills

Due to the Internet's flexibility and power to engage learners, you might consider how well Internet resources can help learners meet the project goals and assessment standards. In this activity, you think about ways to include particular 21st Century skills in your project—research, communication, collaboration, and problem solving. Then you discuss with your colleagues how the Internet can enhance these skills. You may want to refer to the notes you took on the Module 1, Planning Ahead activity about how you use 21st Century skills in your classroom.

Think about the following questions as you review your project goals.

  1. Open your Project Plan and review your project goals.
    • Where in your project do learners need to conduct research?
    • In your project, when could learners' learning be enhanced by communicating with others?
    • Where in your project would collaboration be beneficial, including collaboration via a learning circle with other classes beyond the school boundaries?

  2. How can you ensure learners are using problem solving strategies throughout your project?

  3. Discuss Break into small groups and brainstorm how you could incorporate the Internet into your classroom to further enhance learner learning in regards to research, communication, and collaboration.

Before examining specific Internet resources to use in your project to enhance learners 21st Century skills, you must understand the legal and ethical issues related to the use of electronic media. In the next activity, you explore copyright laws and the fair use of resources.
