Activity 2.2
Step 6: Expanding a Project to Use a Project-Approach to Learning
In
this activity, you will read a scenario of a short project about the moon
for a Grade 6 classroom. In small groups, expand the teacher-centered
project into a learner-centered, project-based project.
Classroom No.1
In this project, learners learn about moon exploration. They compare the characteristics of the moon to those of the Earth. Standards:
- Learners will understand basic concepts about the Earth and space.
Target: - Relate the features of the Earth-moon system
Target Indicators:
Classroom Activities:
The
teacher will show learners pictures of the Earth's moon. A discussion
will occur about what the learners know about moon exploration. The
teacher will write the events up on the board. The learners will use
the textbook and other library books to find other events and the dates
they occurred to put up on the board and complete a timeline of moon
exploration. -
Learners
will read Chapter 3 of their Science textbook together as a class. At
critical points during the reading, the teacher will stop and have the
learners write down different characteristics they find about the moon.
When they are finished reading, the teacher will have the learners
compare and contrast the characteristics of the moon and the Earth in a
Venn diagram.
The learners will be given a quiz to determine what they learned about moon exploration and the characteristics of the moon.
