Module 9 - Using the Showing Evidence Tool to Target Thinking Skills

Activity 9.2

Step 8: Reviewing the Benefits of the Showing Evidence Tool

The Showing Evidence Tool provides the scaffolding needed to create an effective argument. Review the benefits below as you begin to consider how this tool could be used in your own classroom.

Benefits of the Showing Evidence Tool

Learner Benefits:

  • Learners' collaboration and appropriate use of the tool improves higher-order thinking skills.

  • The nature of the Showing Evidence Tool encourages discussion and understanding of complex ideas.

  • The tool allows interactive and dynamic visual representation of thinking.

  • Learners are required to use precise language in their identification, rating, and explanation of evidence, as well as in their consideration of evidence in supporting or negating a claim.

  • Teams can be assigned to review another team's case, strengthening learners' verbal argumentation skills.

Benefits for Teachers:

  • By their very use, thinking tools prompt teachers to shift to learner-centered teaching and learning strategies. When teachers integrate thinking tools, teachers no longer dispense knowledge, but rather guide learners as they create meaning in rich projects.

  • Teachers can quickly and easily set up and manage as many team projects online as needed.

  • Teachers can view and print the detailed work completed by each team and view the progression of their thinking, ideas, and research.

  • Teachers can provide individual team feedback and guidance through the online comments feature.
