South African Digital Resources and Tools that helps with Teaching and Learning

Teachers are always looking for digital resources to make teaching and learning fun and inspiring. We have taken the time to make your time as a teacher easier by doing the research for you and finding free digital resources that can help you in the classroom.

1. e-classroom

The sites consist of CAPS-related worksheets for Grade R-6 which are mainly in English (and Afrikaans) but are currently being translated into the other South African languages.

2. Thunderbolt Kids

This site is part of Siyavula and consists of resource material for Grades 4 – 6 in Natural Sciences and Technology. These are openly-licensed workbooks, available in hardcopy, PDF, web books, and EPUB, for desktop, tablets, and mobile devices.

3. Thutong

Thutong Education Portal offers resources on teacher development, curriculum,
legislation, educational policy, administration, links to external web
resources on the internet and more.

4. 2enable

2enable is a free educational site that is a structured, curriculum-aligned collection of digital content resources prepared for Primary and High School South African teachers and learners.

5. Discovery Education

Discovery Education offers free classroom resources for a number of subjects. Discovery makes learning fun by offering interactive lessons and real-world examples. It also offers student-guided Block, HTML, and Python Coding with a number of teacher support resources.

6. Scratch

Free programming language and online community where you can create your own interactive stories, games, and animations.

7. Khan Academy

Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom.

8. Siyavula

Siyavula offers free and open textbooks, practice platforms, and exam preparations for Mathematics and physical sciences education that is aligned with the South African curriculum. The platform is Zero-rated on MTN and Vodacom.

9. Code.org

Code.org offers an opportunity to learn how to code with a leading curriculum for K-12 in computer science.

10. KitKat School

Tablet-based learning suite with a comprehensive curriculum spanning early childhood through early primary levels. KitKat school is designed to help children with the fundamentals of numeracy and literacy with or without access to resources.
