SchoolMail - dial-up numbers

SchoolMail uses both the SAIX and MWeb dialup infrastructures, with an email server on each network. New accounts are assigned to one of these networks depending on location and technical factors, but accounts are not interchangeable across networks.

This means that:

  • if you are currently using a SAIX dialup number, you may use any other SAIX number, but not MWeb numbers, and
  • if you are currently using a MWeb number, you may use any other MWeb number, but not a SAIX number.

Accounts may be switched from one network to another to solve technical problems on request.

Which network does my UUCP account use?

Accounts are allocated to either the MWeb or SAIX network according to the following guidelines:

  • If the school is within local call-distance of MWeb POPs, the account will be created on the MWeb network / server (as this requires less administration than creating SAIX accounts).
  • If the school is not within local call-distance of MWeb POPs, but within local call distance of a SAIX POP, the account will be created on the SAIX network / server.

Accounts which use MWeb POPs use the server ochre.school.za (official hostname uucp-uia.school.za ), hosted by MWeb in Cape Town. Accounts which use SAIX POPs use the server mopani.school.za (official hostname uucp-saix.school.za ), hosted by Intekom in Johannesburg. Both servers have the uucp node name "uucp".

If you are not sure which network your account uses, please contact SchoolMail Support .

SchoolMail accounts can also be used using UUCP over TCP/IP (TCP port 540). This means that, depending on the system and software, you can use SchoolMail using a PPP dialup account from any ISP, or a leased-line or ISDN connection.

Windows 95, 98 and NT systems support this using Taxis Mail and FreeBSD, Linux and other unix systems support this using Taylor UUCP (see Software ). This feature is not available for DOS or Windows 3.1 systems.
