One of the first things I think any teacher who is interested in technology-integration should do is create their own classroom blog. A classroom blog can transform your class even if the only computer in the class is yours – your laptop! It will give the parents a peek into the classroom setup, and it will join you to a whole lot of new blogging teacher friends around the world. You can involve your students in your blog in so many exciting ways. Google̵...

Yesterday in our new 30 Days of Google series I wrote a post about the Chrome browser ‘Get to know the Chrome browser’. Today I want to tell you about some of my favourite extensions (all free) that you can add to your Google Chrome browser bar to make browsing a breeze!
What exactly is a Chrome extension?
Chrome extensions are free extra features and functionality that you can choose to add to your browser from the Chrome Web Store. Generally I don’t go to the web store...
Today I am starting a series of 30 posts about Google tools that I just love! Having recently returned from the Google Teacher Academy in New York and still basking in the memory of it all, I thought a 30 day series in conjunction with a short free online SchoolNet course on Google products would be very apt. (Oh New York! I can hardly believe that thriving metropolis is being ravashed by Hurricane Sandy.) To get back to Google products, for me there is no better place to start than the Chr...
Introducing Eunice High School
Eunice was the first school in South Africa to be selected for the Microsoft Innovative Schools programme several years back. After that their principal, Paul Cassar, was the first South African educator to be featured on Vice President of Microsoft – Antony Salicito’s blog ‘Daily Edventures – Antony Salicito’s 365-day look at global heroes‘. (Take a read by clicking on the image below). So it is not surprising that Eunice would take the initiative of la...
Often when you are at a life-changing professional development event, such as the recent Google Teacher Academy in New York, you want to have a group photo to remember the occasion and the people – and you may want to display it on a blog or website. Zoomit is the perfect tool to use for this.
Here is the example and then I’ll tell you how to go about it:
1. First you need to put your photo somewhere on the web so as to obtain a web link.
2. Open http://zoom.it/ and add y...

SchoolNet has been offering to its premium members short free online courses in various web applications relevant to teachers since November last year, and every now and then one has the very pleasant opportunity of meeting some of the participants face to face. This happened to me at the Apple Leadership Tour Day last term when I met three such educators from Mickelfield Primary – namely, two teachers who have done quite a few of the courses and their principal Jeanette ...

The East London TeachMeet logo
Submitted by Fiona Beal
In September I had the HUGE privilege of flying up to East London to attend the first TeachMeet in the Eastern Cape. I was invited by two schools, Stirling Primary and Clarendon Primary. Whatever one may hear about education in the Eastern Cape, these two schools are beacons of light providing an excellent education for their students. I was taken on a tour of the schools which left me quite amazed. The TeachMeet was organised...
In my post yesterday I wrote a reflection on the latest Google Teacher Academy in New York. The more I think about it, it was a mind blowing
experience! We absorbed so much useful information both informally through
networking and sharing, and formally from the various talented
presenters. Today’s post will mention but a
FEW of my take aways from the GTA experience
Something interesting about Google
When you
are there walking through different parts of the huge building you see all
these young (so...

A Google Teacher Academy (GTA) is definitely something that every teacher interested in technology integration should strive to attend at some stage of their teaching career. I have just been privileged to attend one in New York and have come back somewhat exhilarated and enthused, and quite amazed at the enormous amount of learning that happened in that short whirlwind of time.
So what exactly is a Google Teacher Academy?
Google holds these popular events consist...
